Keeping Your Nails in Tip Top Shape

Dear Audrey,

What is the best way to get my nails to grow and keep them healthy? Every time I try to grow them long, at least one or two always seem to break!

Having struggled with this myself, I have total sympathy for you! Here are a few tips and recommendations to get your nails in tip top shape.

Better Shape Up!

Just like your hair, nails can snag and split at the free edge. Regular maintenance is key. Choose an oval, or if you are feeling adventurous, try a trendy pointed shape. Squared-off styles can be attractive, but can to be the worst offenders for nails that are prone to splitting. Be realistic about length! Really long nails can be lovely, but are unpractical for most people, especially active ones. File your nails in long strokes from the outside edge to the center, avoiding filing towards the outside edge as much as possible. I love the Crystal File from Nail Tek. It comes with its own travel case, so your sunglasses won't suffer a scuffing if they happen to get tossed together in your purse.

All About The Base

Support the vitality of your nails from the inside with a daily multi-vitamin, and on the outside with a strengthening treatment. OPI Nail Envy is an easy-to-use, brush-on treatment that comes in 6 formulas that offer targeted solutions. They can be used alone or with polish, so you lacquer lovers don’t have to skip a beat!

Keep Up The Good Work!

Follow up with weekly manicures. Keep your file handy and gently reshape your nails often. For salon results at home, wait until after you shower, so your cuticles are soft. If you have really stubborn cuticles, try applying some Blue Cross Cuticle Remover. Then take a manicure stick or cuticle pusher and gently push back your cuticles. Apply your moisturizer and some CND Solar Oil Nail and Cuticle Conditioner to fortify with Vitamin E and lock in moisture. You should expect to see some great results in no time!
