A beautiful face

Playing with Color

Dear Audrey,

I just got my hair colored and I love it—now, how do I keep the color from fading?

I love the way I feel after getting my hair colored too.  My hair feels great and shiny and brilliant.  I have a few tips to help you keep that color bright—but let’s start from the beginning. Why does the color fade?

All hair color fades over time due to several reasons, including shampooing with harsh surfactants, heat styling, and environmental factors such as exposure to UVA/UVB rays.  All of these factors lessen the pigments that are deposited in the hair, thus causing the color to fade.

Shampoo = Detergent

Let’s start with shampoos.  A shampoo is really a detergent. Yup, you wash your hair with detergent really.  Most contain salts and sulfates as lathering agents. These bind to the color molecules and lead to them running down the sink instead of staying where they belong on your hair. So what can you do?  I recommend using professional shampoos made specifically for color treated hair.  Most of them don’t contain ingredients that are harmful to color additives and are salt and sulfate free. There are several Professional product lines available including: ColorProof, Pureology, ENJOY and Crome.

Styling Products that Protect

But don’t stop there!  Regular use of gels, mousses, hair waxes and hair sprays also play a part in fading locks.  They can strip your hair of color and add to the reason your color is fading.  Instead, try to use professional styling products that are made specifically for color treated hair.  Look for Professional styling products that are made for color treated hair like ColorProof PerfectPlay™ Style Gel or the Colour Stylist™ Products by Pureology. These products take into account the fact that your tresses have been colored and include ingredients made specifically for color treated hair that help moisturize your hair keeping it radiant and bright.  Marie Claire Magazine suggests you use a deep-conditioning hair treatment or mask at least once a week. Massage it into your hair and let it penetrate for about 15 minutes, then rinse and you'll notice your locks looks instantly revitalized.

Hold the Heat!

If you are a fan of hair dryers, curling irons or flat irons beware. Exposing your hair to heat will cause the hair shafts to open. This allows heat to penetrate your hair which can also lead to your hair color fading. If you are going to use a styling tool that uses heat, consider using a styling product made specifically for color treated hair that will protect your tresses like Pureology Fortifying Heat Spray. Bottom line; don’t over-expose your hair to heat if you want to keep your amazing color.

So remember to protect your color, chose Professional Products made specifically for color treated hair. The staff at Westside Beauty Supply will be happy to help you figure out exactly what you need to keep your hair looking good!

Here’s to a more colorful you!
