ASK AUDREY:

Save Hair from Chlorine and Salt Water Damage

My family and I have been swimming a lot, and our hair is getting really dry and discolored. Can you recommend products to help get our hair back in shape?

Whether it’s a pool or the big blue sea, extra time in the water and sun can leave your hair sticky, dry, tangled, and even chlorine-green! Here are a few tips and products to protect and restore the health of your and your family’s hair.

Water water everywhere

Your hair can absorb more than 30% of its weight in moisture. About 75% of the maximum amount possible happens within approximately 4 minutes. When and where possible, soak your hair thoroughly under a shower, tap, or hose before you enter the pool or ocean. It will help keep your hair from absorbing as much salt, chlorine, and other drying agents if thoroughly soaked with clean water. A little spritz of leave-in conditioner also helps too. We love the ultra-light, silicone-free Leave-in Conditioner from Formula 18. Don’t forget the SPF. Sun Bum Scalp & Hair SPF30 Mist is a quick and easy way to protect your head from damaging UV rays.

Post plunge products

Detoxing your hair is easy with natural and safe Malibu C Swimmers Wellness Shampoo, Conditioner, and Treatment. These products gently remove deposits from the hair to help restore tone, manageability and shine with a kiss of citrus. They are great to use after pool or beach, and their mild ingredients and natural citrus scent are safe for the whole family. KeraColor Purify Plus or Purify Plus Lite (for fine or thin hair) are quick and easy spray leave-ins that neutralize chlorine and other trace minerals. Enjoy Clarifying Spray is a great option that you can use in conjunction with your favorite shampoo. Just spray it on your hair, work it through (don’t rinse), and continue with your favorite cleanser to effectively remove chlorine and other mineral deposits while restoring pH.

Just to clarify

Other reasons to use a clarifying shampoo besides the ocean or pool:

  • Before a chemical service, clarifying shampoos remove buildup from the hair shaft, ensuring more even results with hair color and perms.
  • If you have hard or well water, clarifying shampoos and treatments can help remove discoloration and improve manageability.
  • As a buildup buster, if you regularly use many styling products, haircare, or treatments that contain silicones, resins, waxes, or heavy oils.
