I’m in my mid-50s, and my hair is really starting to thin. Is there anything I can do to get some of it to come back?
Yes! This can be something that affects some of us our whole lives, not just later in life. It can also be situational. Let look into some of the main components that cause or contribute to hair thinning or loss and what we can do about it.
Is it in your genes? Natural, age-related hormonal changes can trigger hair loss. Testosterone is converted into a toxin called Dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Stress can also cause increased levels of testosterone that are converted to DHT. Thyroid issues and hormonal changes after pregnancy or during menopause are also common contributors.
The root of the problem
A healthy body and scalp are key for hair growth. Eat a balanced diet and drink plenty of water. Keep your scalp clean. Scalp debris hinders new hair from growing. This break in the growth cycle will cause lasting effects on the density of your hair. Start with a product that will gently but thoroughly cleanse the scalp and remove buildup. We highly recommend the BioRepair-8 System from ColorProof. It uses a skincare approach with alpha-hydroxy acids to gently and effectively nibble away dead skin and pollutants. Natural botanicals & vitamins stop DHT absorption at the follicle and strengthen hair.
Strength in numbers
Nioxin is another great line to try and offers several system kits. I will break it down the options so you better understand which one is best for you.
Is your hair au natural? Systems 1 or 2
Is it color treated? Systems 3 or 4
Has it been chemically processed (perm, straightened, etc.?) Systems 5 or 6
Each has an option for light or progressed thinning. If yours is significant, choose the higher number of the two for maximum results.
Fake it ‘till you make it
Styling products can be a huge help to add fullness and increase hair density. Je Veux Glaze Styling Lotion is excellent for a boost of volume. Apply a small amount to the root area on clean, damp hair. Blow out with a round brush and finish with Kenra Volume Spray.
Dry shampoos are a great way to add grip and fullness to fine hair and can be used anytime for a quick and instant pick me up. Nioxin styling products work double time to prolong the fullness of the 3-Part System Kits while styling your hair.
